The legendary Willie Nelson and his family are debuting their take on better health and wellness through hemp with the official launch of the brand Willie’s Remedy and its first product: infused whole-bean coffee. The music icon and longtime U.S. farming activist leads the charge for putting American-grown hemp to good use with Willie’s Remedy, which features non-intoxicating hemp-based products designed for health-conscious consumers of all ages.
“Hemp production in America was stifled for so long, but it could now make all the difference for small independent farmers,” Mr. Nelson said. “Hemp isn’t just good for our farmers and our economy, it’s good for our soil, our environment-and our health.”
The brand’s first product, Willie’s Remedy Whole Bean Coffee, is infused with certified organic, full-spectrum hemp oil grown in Colorado. The coffee is sourced from various smallholder farms in Colombia’s Santuario region, it’s a medium-dark blend with balanced acidity that packs a powerful aroma, with flavor notes of cherry and cocoa. The proprietary coffee blend is composed of three bean varietals: Castillo, Colombia, and Caturra. When properly brewed, each 8-ounce cup of coffee contains 7 mg of hemp-derived CBD. Mr. Nelson and his wife, Annie Nelson, made headlines in 2015 when they introduced the cannabis brand Willie’s Reserve, which taps a carefully selected network of state-licensed cultivators to provide the main ingredient for products sold in legal medical or adult-use cannabis markets.
“The Willie’s Remedy line is a purposeful departure from Willie’s Reserve,” Mrs. Nelson said, “it’s not about getting high, but it’s still all about Willie and the benefits we believe cannabis has to offer. Willie and I are proud to offer quality, American-sourced hemp wellness options for people of his generation, our kids’ generation, and everyone in between.”
All Willie’s Remedy products are infused with full-spectrum hemp oil made from crops organically grown by American farmers. Other products in development include confections, vaporizable hemp oils and topicals. A 2016 agricultural study in the trade journal Agronomy noted that one of most promising markets for North American hemp production are the cannabinoid compounds that can be extracted from the plant.
A growing body of researchshows cannabinoids have myriad wellness benefits, from providing pain relief to promoting better sleep. With the Willie’s Remedy brand, the Nelson family continues its commitment to supporting American farmers. In 2016, Americans consumed $700 million worth of products made primarily from imported hemp, according to a 2018 report by the Congressional Research Service. The recent passage of the federal farm bill and its removal of hemp from the controlled substances list could offer a major boost to the American farming economy.
“We first organized Farm Aid in 1985 to call attention to the loss of family farms and raise funds to keep farm families on their land,” Mr. Nelson said. “I’ve worked with these communities for decades. When it comes to creating sustainable jobs for American farmers and manufacturers, hemp is the answer.”
