San Fernin will play the WFPK Port Stage Friday July 17th at 6:15PM

San Fermin is the work of Brooklyn composer and songwriter Ellis Ludwig-Leone, who wrote the debut album in six weeks on the mountainous border between Alberta and British Columbia. The project has since then coalesced into a core of eight performing members.

Many of the songs on Jackrabbit, San Fermin’s second album, existed only on Ludwig-Leone’s laptop for the better part of a year, as he toured and turned the band into an ensemble operation. When at last he revisited them, he knew that they had to be reborn.

The self-titled debut album was released worldwide in the fall of 2013 via Downtown Records.

“The first record was written in a very pre-composed way, recorded when I didn’t think this would be a band. So I went from being this isolated composer guy to sitting in the back of a crowded van with seven other band members playing shows in rock clubs every night,” he says. “When I got back, I ripped these holes in the middle of the existing songs and added some new ones. I rethought everything I had been writing.”

It has received rave reviews from the likes of NPR, The New York Times, The New Yorker, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, NME, BBC, CBC, The Telegraph, The Guardian, The London Sunday Times, and Le Monde.

Rolling Stone hailed the band as the “masters of highbrow chamber pop” and the Village Voice raved, “behold the new Arcade Fire: they are San Fermin.” The band recently brought their “totally explosive set” (The New York Times) to their national television debut on CBS This Morning and their Late Night Television debut on Last Call With Carson Daly.
Additionally, the band has sold out shows (capacity 300 – 700) in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Chicago, Milwaukee, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Paris, France, Toronto, Montreal, Indianapolis, Denver, Portland, Seattle, San Diego, and Pittsburgh. Finally, the band has performed at Shaky Knees Festival (Atlanta, GA), Firefly Music Festival (Dover, DE), Latitude Music Festival (UK), Longitude Music Festival (Dublin, Ireland), Melt! Festival (Berlin, Germany), Valkof Festival (Nijmegen, NL), Festival d’ ete (Quebec City, QC), Hillside Music Festival (Guelph, ON), eTown (Boulder, CO), Colorado Music Festival (Denver, CO), Lollapalooza (Chicago, IL), Celebrate Brooklyn, (Brooklyn, NY), First City Festival (Monterey, CA), LouFest (St. Louis, MO), Boston Calling (Boston, MA), Fun Fun Fun Fest, (Austin, TX) and more.
