John Rich has released “Shut Up About Politics,” a song he wrote with Fox News host Greg Gutfeld.
On Friday (May 31) before CMA Fest kicked off, Rich appeared on the Fox News talk show The Five, which features Gutfeld.
During the show, Rich discussed the origins of the song.
“We had the chat about (how) it would be fun to come up with a song when you guys came to Nashville,” Rich told The Five hosts of Gutfield’s co-write. “I get your email…You had some really good lines and ‘shut up about politics’ was in there. So I pulled that one out and then built this song.”
Proceeds from the song go to Folds of Honor, an organization which provides educational scholarships to children and spouses of deceased or disabled service members.
“Well, we thought if we’re going to go through this whole process of recording it, why not go ahead and put it up online where people can download it? It’s 99 cents and 100 percent of that 99 cents goes to these guys — to Folds of Honor,” he explained.
Rich has been fairly outspoken about politics in the past. Last year, the singer offered to debate pro-gun control artists on the issue. He also criticized Nike’s decision to feature former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in their ads. In a Twitter post, Rich has a photo of his soundman, who had cut the “swoosh” logo off the top of his Nike socks in protest of the company’s decision.
“Politics sucks, especially when it sneaks into places where it shouldn’t be,” Gutfeld, 54, said as he introduced Rich and the new song on the show. “Decades ago, our reliance on politics got out of hand when the political is now personal and vice versa. Now politics rears its ugly face at football games and superhero shows and we’re sick of it!”

“Shut Up About Politics” debuted at number one on the country music charts and is number two overall. Rich took to Twitter to celebrate the news and thank “The Five” for letting him premiere it.
