Jennell Has Found Her “Home,” Geographically and Musically

Jennell pictureSinger/songwriter Jennell is set to release her third EP, “Home,” on August 28 and she is excited about the release.

There’s been a lot of changes since the release of her last EP. For one, she has moved to Nashville from Los Angeles. She said she actually didn’t know about Nashville until about three years ago. She made the move last year and she said she’s very happy living in the Music City. “This is where I want to stay,” Jennell said.

She said everyone in the south is so friendly that it literally took no time to meet new people. “They are willing to help you out.”

Jennell said she has pushed herself to write with more people. “I’ve done a lot of co-writing,” she said.

Even though she has lived in Nashville for a while now, she hasn’t done a lot of performing in Nashville yet. She said she didn’t want to play her old material because she is going in a new direction with her music.

On her new sound, she said she wanted a more organic sound. “I didn’t want to sound like an overproduced country singer.”

While in Los Angeles, she was recording country music that she thought would be hits, but she didn’t have a personal connection with the song. That’s not the case with the “Home” EP. “This one is a lot more personal,” Jennell said.

In the first song on the EP, “Long Way From Home,” she can relate as she is originally from Wyoming. Jennell said she wants people to know her story. She said she is a family girl so leaving home is that hardest thing she’s ever done.

Jennell said she lived a very sheltered life when she was in Wyoming and said she “was like a deer in headlights” when she moved to Los Angeles. She also attended grad school in California.

The final song in the EP is “Feels Like Home,” a song that celebrates that she is where she needs to be. For Jennell, that place seems to be Nashville. “For the first time in several years, I feel I am where I belong,” she said.

Another difference in the new EP is Jennell had a lot more creative freedom in making this one. The new EP was produced by Dewey Boyd, Jr. at the Forty-One-Fifteen recording studio in Nashville. Jennell said she was a part of the process and they did everything together.

Jennell is “so much happier” with this this EP. “It’s like my baby,” she said.

In addition to being a singer/songwriter, Jennell is also a pediatric occupational therapist. She said she thinks it is important to have a good solid career. She said she had a lot of great experience and she was able to find a job at a pediatric clinic in Franklin.

Jennell will perform at an album release/showcase at the Whiskey Rhythm Saloon on Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
