Eva Schubert hails from the beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia and exudes her own style and brand of tastefully done easy flowing jazz with the backing of an extremely talented quartet. “Hot Damn Romance” is Eva’s third album and is filled with effortless and easy rippling guitar, with jazzy horns emanating class and elegance.
Schubert is a masterful singer/songwriter whose love of music was inspired by jazz greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, icons such as Etta James and the great Leonard Cohen. Her writing is diverse and has a range that is so diverse it gently crosses through a wide range of styles. Her pallet is primarily jazz with distinct vintage texture and the lyrics flow with playful humor.
“The essence of this EP is real musicians, playing live in studio together. I deliberately avoided electronic sounds because there is something direct and resonant about the musicianship, and we wanted to showcase that. Also, what I think a lot of people love about old school jazz is this very quality of sound, which often gets lost in the jungle of contemporary production. The other characteristic of vintage jazz is fresh and thoughtful lyrics, which is something I tried to bring to this as well.” – Eva Schibert
The single “Flying High” opens the album with a light breezy feel. The song is a beautiful carefree tune that would fit well cruising with the top down while driving along the coast, enjoying the cool summer breeze and the beach.
“Brawler” is a cool groove moving jazz tune with light easy guitar and grooving bass. I loved the bright blast of horns bringing it all together. The song is about a smooth dastardly low down smooth operator working his wicked wiles.
“Sweet Man” opens with the grooving sound of nice horn section and the inviting cymbals of a cool percussion rift. Vocals are bright and smooth, very inviting.
Schubert is beautiful inside and out and her voice is superb, rich, and alluring. The genre of music she has chosen as her profession is right on and she was obviously born to do this. It’s classy and mixed just right. She’s got the funky jazz mix going, sass and class, and I would place her in the top ten jazz artists to watch for our fall run.
This collection of “Hot New Romance” includes five classic jazz songs that are sure to win you over to want more. All originals and all written at different times, the songs are pure gold in the jazz genre.
