Appearing on the Producers Chair August 27, 2009

Tim DuBois is long known as one of Nashville’s top visionary and  artist-minded music executives. An Oklahoma native, DuBois became a Certified Public Accountant in the 1970s before moving to Texas, photo where he successfully held positions with Arthur Anderson & Co. and the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. Country music was in the air there, and soon DuBois had become drawn to the notion of writing country songs himself. From 1977 through 1985, DuBois, whose passion to become a songwriter had instigated a move from Texas to Nashville, continued to inhabit the worlds of finance and songwriting, working as both a publishing company staff writer, and as an accounting professor at several Nashville universities. Eventually, he proved himself a songwriter of no small consequence, composing over 20 country singles including five #1 records, like Alabama’s "Love in the First Degree" and "The Bluest Eyes in Texas" by Restless Heart.  Restless Heart became DuBois’ first client when he exchanged his academic post for a job as artist manager, opening the Nashville branch of Los Angeles-based Fitzgerald-Hartley. The new office signed Vince Gill, resulting in DuBois-Gill songwriting collaborations including the 1992 Country Music Association Song of the Year "When I Call Your Name."
When legendary founder and then chief of Arista Records Clive Davis was looking for someone to open a Nashville division, DuBois got the nod.  The company sold 80 million albums in its first eleven years, breaking and sustaining acts like Alan Jackson, Brooks & Dunn, Pam Tillis, Diamond Rio, Steve Wariner, and Brad Paisley. His subsequent partnership with legendary producer Tony Brown heading up Universal South Records launched the careers of Joe Nichols, Cross Canadian Ragweed, and Shooter Jennings.
In 2007, DuBois returned to the faculty of Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management, where he is currently developing courses related to the music business. He has also recently rejoined forces with Marc Dottore to form Dottore-DuBois Artist Management, dedicated to providing their clients with the tools and guidance to navigate and thrive in the music industry of the 21st century.
Tim currently serves on the boards of the Country Music Association, Academy of Country Music, Americana Music Association, SunTrust Bank, and as chairman of the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau.  He is a past board member of Leadership Music, National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, and Nashville Songwriters Association International.  For his many accomplishments, he has been named “Record Executive of the Year” by Pollstar, and one of the entertainment industry’s “101 Most Powerful People” by Entertainment Weekly.
