Big Joe’s “Tough” Questions: Lee Brice

One of the coolest people that I have had the opportunity to meet during my tenure here at Nashville Music Guide is Lee Brice.  And being the great guy that he is, Lee didn’t have any problems answering this month’s tough questions.

It’s always cool to hangout with one of your idols from time-to-time while downtown on Lower Broadway or around town at one of the many Music Row events happening daily.  Since the first time I met Lee, I’ve known that he is not just a prolific songwriter, but also has the stage presence of a leading-light performer. Brice wants to be on the stage every night, no matter what, and he brings it. I have noticed that same look in the eyes of fellow Oklahoman, Garth Brooks, not to mention the same energy.  Maybe that’s why they both enjoyed success with “More Than a Memory,” a song penned by Lee. As a fan of country music and a hard-working American, it is exciting for me to know that Lee Brice is going to give a ticket-worthy performance.

Be sure to check out Lee on tour this Fall with Jerrod Niemann to see what I’m talking about. For more information visit LeeBrice.com. Support the cause; buy the music and a t-shirt too!

Big Joe: Did you cry when your Garth smash hit “More Than A Memory” went No. 1 in about 3 minutes  22 seconds a few years ago?

Lee: I would have but I was with a bunch of friends in a pool in Kansas City drinking margaritas. I think I shed some tears later.

Big Joe:  How do you feel about Twitter and do you tweet?

Lee: I do tweet. I like to connect with the fans as much as possible.

Big Joe:  What was the first song you ever played on guitar?

Lee: Probably “Amazing Grace.” As soon as I started playing guitar, I was writing and playing my own songs. But probably “Amazing Grace.”

Big Joe: How old were you when you wrote your first song? What was it called and what inspired it?

Lee: I was ten when I wrote my first song. I think it was a song about friends. I remember thinking it had been years since I had talked to my girlfriend from Kindergarten. I thought we should be friends. I thought we should all be friends forever.

Big Joe: Favorite Merle Haggard Song?

Lee: I love a lot of them. But definitely “That’s the Way Love Goes.”

Big Joe:  What is your favorite honky-tonk venue that you have headlined so far after “Love Like Crazy”? Before?

Lee:  Man, there are some good ones. Joe’s Bar in Chicago and Whiskey Tango in Kansas City are a couple. Any honky-tonk venue that sells out is my favorite. Before “Love Like Crazy” I would say somewhere in North or South Carolina. Coyote Joe’s in Charlotte is a good one.

Big Joe: What is the most unusual gift you ever received by a fan? (Clean)

Lee: I’ve had some unusual gifts. Well, he’s a friend but I guess he’s a fan too, and I’m a big fan of his. My buddy Brantley Gilbert just got me a set of brass knuckles for my birthday.

Big Joe: How’s your little brother Louis doing? I like that guy. He’s living the dream like all of us!!

Lee: He’s awesome. He’s on the road constantly. He’s out a lot with my good friend Nick Norman. As soon as possible I want to work on producing him. He’s killing it.
