BIg Joe’s Big Week

Big Joe Matthews had one of the biggest weeks of his honky-tonkin’ career the week of Independence Day.  After opening for Grammy-award winner David Ball on Independence Day at Rooster’s Chicken Shack in Hennessey, Okla., Big Joe was invited to join the Jon Anthony Band to rock the crowd at Sliders Bar in Oklahoma City.

“I’ve always dreamed of playing there,” says Big Joe of the Sliders stage.  “I’m very honored that Jon Anthony afforded me the opportunity to do it.”

The stage at Sliders Bar has hosted numerous famous and up-and-coming country musicians.  (In fact,  an up-and-coming Toby Keith used to play there regularly back when it was called Chastain’s.)  And now you can add Big Joe Matthews to that list of Who’s Who in country music in OKC.

Big Joe and the band performed a wide range of songs, including country standards and several songs from Big Joe’s latest record, Travelin’ Man, which he recorded during his time in Nashville.  The crowd at Sliders loved it all.

“They danced the whole time, even to the songs I wrote from Travelin’ Man,” Big Joe says.  “It’s a lot of fun to play honky tonk music and watch people honky tonk, especially to songs I wrote.”

For Big Joe, the experience at Sliders was exactly how he imagined it.

“The staff and Ms. Doris were awesome,” he says.  “I was thankful to play there, and I’m glad that I could get on their stage and do what I love.”

Though it’s been a big week, Big Joe says that it’s just the tip of the iceberg.  He’s been adding dates daily in Oklahoma, Texas, and more.
